about

Qərib Həyat, meaning Strange Life, was recorded at home in Tbilisi in March 2020 in the build-up to a UK tour. Aşıq Nargilə was due to perform at the Barbican in London as part of Richard Dawson’s ‘Delight is Right’ curated program. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic her tour was subsequently cancelled with all foreseeable performance and teaching opportunities brought to a standstill. This is her second album, following the 2016 ‘Yurt Yeri’ on Café Oto’s Otoroku label, and represents the latest stage in her mastery of the saz and the aşıq repertoire. These intimate home recordings, consisting of both traditional pieces and new compositions, are an expression of continuity in the face of uncertainty, resilience through adversity.

About Aşıq Nargilə:

Based in Tbilisi with deep roots in the ‘Borçalı’ region of Southern Georgia, Nargile Mehtiyeva aka Ashiq Nargile has been playing saz (long-neck lute) and singing since the age of 15. Fluent in Azerbaijani and Georgian, Nargile represents the cosmopolitan heritage of old Tbilisi, a city once known as a meeting point for multilingual bards who would travel through the region serving as conduits for news, ideas, music and culture. A powerful solo performer, her vocal recital of epic folk poetry is by turns ecstatic and deeply expressive, and is interspersed with bursts of virtuosic, highly ornamented saz. Equally comfortable performing moving laments or upbeat folk dances, Nargile is currently the only female bard living and performing in Georgia and has been teaching the art to new generations. Thanks to the efforts of Mountains of Tongues, a non-profit group promoting the diverse musical dialects of the Caucasus, she has toured extensively - supporting the likes of Richard Dawson and performing at festivals and venues including Tusk, WOMAD and the Barbican - and has been wowing audiences with the elusive, hypnotic beauty of her music.

about

Mountains of Tongues Tbilisi, Georgia

Mountains of Tongues is dedicated to preserving and promoting lesser known music from the Caucasus region.

We focus on music and its role in the everyday lives of people living in the region, with an intentional disregard for rigid notions of authenticty or genre; sounds from the intersection of the modern/traditional, the participatory/presentational, and the sacred/secular.
